TL;DR: Build the People controls the company needs for its current stage, and know when a workaround has become a cost or a risk.

In an early company, speed matters. A founder can approve a hire, settle a question and explain a role directly. That approach often works well until the volume or complexity of decisions exceeds one person’s capacity. Growth then exposes gaps in ownership, records, management and consistent execution.

The commercial question is not when to “add HR”. It is what must be reliable for the company to meet its plan. At a minimum, that includes lawful hiring, contracts, Right to Work, payroll, pensions, employee records, data, confidentiality, health and safety and practical policies. A missing control can create cost and distraction when the business can least afford it.

Next, look at the operating friction. Who can approve a role and its cost? Who owns onboarding and the milestones that show a new hire is becoming productive? Can managers explain what success looks like? Are reward and performance decisions made consistently? If every decision returns to the founder, the business has a capacity constraint as well as a People issue.

Spreadsheets, outsourced support and simple processes can remain the right tools. Review them when information is unreliable, hiring accelerates, managers are added, operations cross borders or diligence becomes likely. Buy technology when it solves a measured problem; adding a system without clear ownership simply moves the confusion.

Assess the business plan, existing practice and the points where People gaps may delay delivery, increase risk or waste management time. Put the essentials in place in the right sequence: clear owners, reliable records, practical manager routines and systems proportionate to the need. The result is a company that can grow without rebuilding its foundations every few months.
